CPCT Typing Test: 15 Minutes, 30 NWPM English / 20 NWPM Hindi
CPCT is Madhya Pradesh's common computer proficiency certificate, and its typing section is unusual in two ways: it lasts a full fifteen minutes, and it reports net words per minute rather than gross. Net words per minute, and why it punishes guessing
CPCT reports NWPM, which means mistakes are subtracted before the division rather than after. This simulator uses the same shape of formula: total characters divided by five, minus mistakes, divided by the fifteen minutes. One consequence is that a wrong word is worth more than a slow word — skipping a hard word to save a second and getting the next five out of alignment is the most expensive thing you can do on this test.
The second consequence is that the 30 NWPM requirement in English is harder than a 30 gross WPM test elsewhere. Plan for a gross speed of about 34–36 so that your net lands safely above thirty.
Remington GAIL or InScript — pick one and stop switching
The rule book allows both layouts for Hindi. InScript is the layout that ships with Windows and is used by most other recruitment boards, so if you are also preparing for SSC, RRB or a High Court post, InScript is the sensible single investment. Remington GAIL suits candidates who learned Hindi typing on older typewriter-style software and already have the muscle memory.
What loses marks is switching between the two in the weeks before the exam. The two layouts put the same characters in completely different places, so alternating resets your muscle memory every time. This page's built-in keyboard uses InScript; if your choice is Remington GAIL, practise on software that offers it and use this page only for the English section and for timing discipline.
Fifteen minutes is an endurance test
Fifteen minutes of continuous Hindi typing is considerably harder than two seven minute runs. Candidates typically lose four to six words per minute in the last third as the wrists tire and attention drifts. Two things help. First, build up the duration in practice rather than always testing at fifteen minutes — do eight, then eleven, then fifteen across a fortnight. Second, fix your posture before you start: forearms level, wrists off the desk edge, screen at eye height. Discomfort at minute four becomes a real speed loss by minute twelve.
