SSC CGL DEST Simulator: 2,000 Key Depressions in 15 Minutes
DEST is not a normal typing test. It is a data entry test built around figures, file numbers and rupee amounts, and it is scored in key depressions rather than words. This simulator uses report-style passages of exactly that kind and shows your key depressions per hour alongside the 2,000 depression target.

Why numbers are the whole game in DEST
An ordinary typing passage is about 95% lower-case letters. A DEST passage is full of items like
F. 12(9)/Est/2026 and Rs. 4,85,720, which force your hands onto the number
row, the shift key and the punctuation cluster in the same breath. Candidates who only practised
prose lose two-thirds of their speed the moment the first figure appears.
The fix is boring and effective: drill digits and symbols separately until they are as automatic as letters. Day 24-25 of the course is built for the number row, and Day 26-27 for shift combinations. Do those before you start timing yourself on full DEST passages.
Reading key depressions and KDPH correctly
A key depression is one press of any key that produces a character, spaces included. Your KDPH is simply depressions divided by the fraction of an hour you typed for, so 2,000 depressions in 15 minutes is 8,000 KDPH. The simulator shows this figure live, because it is the number the Commission's software actually looks at.
Error percentage is reported separately here, computed as mistakes against words typed. The Commission sets the permissible limit in the notice for each recruitment cycle, and it differs for unreserved and reserved categories, so read your own notice rather than trusting a coaching video. Practically, keeping errors under about 5% leaves you safe in every version of the rule we have seen.
Typing figures without looking down
- Indian digit grouping. 4,85,720 is grouped two-two-three, not three-three. Read it as "four comma eighty five comma seven twenty" and the commas stop being surprises.
- Use the number row, not the numpad. Exam machines may have the numpad locked, and switching hands to the pad breaks your rhythm anyway.
- Learn three symbol positions cold: the slash, the brackets and the full stop with a following space. Those three cover most file numbers.
- Say the figure once, type it once. Re-reading a long number mid-way is where transposition errors like 4,58,720 come from.
How to use this simulator in the last ten days
Run one 15 minute attempt a day and write down three numbers: key depressions, error percentage and how far into the passage you reached. You are looking for the depressions figure to cross 2,000 with errors comfortably inside the limit, not for a personal best. If your depressions are fine but errors are high, slow down by about 10% — in DEST a clean 2,100 beats a messy 2,600 every time.

How many words per minute is 2000 key depressions in 15 minutes?
Dividing 2,000 depressions by five characters per word gives 400 words, and over 15 minutes that is about 27 words per minute — noticeably slower than CHSL, which is why accuracy on figures matters more than raw speed.
Is DEST conducted in Hindi?
The Data Entry Speed Test is conducted on printed matter in English. Hindi typing applies to the CHSL LDC/JSA typing test, not to DEST.
Can I use backspace during DEST?
Corrections are normally possible, but the instruction sheet handed out at the centre is the final word. Practise as if corrections are expensive, because time spent correcting is time not spent adding depressions.
Does DEST carry marks in CGL Tier 2?
No. It is a qualifying module. Failing it, however, removes you from consideration for the posts where it is prescribed.
