RRB NTPC Typing Skill Test: 10 Minute Simulator

Free simulator · no signup · updated 22 September 2026

The railway typing skill test is qualifying, but its scoring formula is the strictest of the common clerical exams: mistakes beyond a small buffer are converted into a deduction of whole words. This simulator applies that deduction openly so you can see how much a single careless word actually costs.

The deduction formula, in plain arithmetic

Railway boards do not simply divide correct words by minutes. The published approach works in four steps, and this simulator prints each one after your run:

  1. Add up mistake points — a full mistake counts as one, a half mistake as half.
  2. Subtract a buffer of 5% of the words you typed. Small numbers of slips are forgiven.
  3. Multiply the mistakes that remain by ten. That is a deduction in words.
  4. Subtract the deduction from your words typed and divide by the ten minutes.

Notice what step three means. Once you exhaust the buffer, each additional mistake costs ten words — a full word per minute of your final score. Two careless mistakes past the buffer can pull a 32 WPM typist below the 30 WPM line. Error control is not a nicety here; it is the test.

Working the buffer to your advantage

At 300 words typed, a 5% buffer is fifteen mistake points, which sounds generous. It is, and that is exactly why candidates get complacent. The buffer scales with volume, so slowing down shrinks your allowance at the same time as it should be protecting you. The stable strategy is to hold a moderate, even pace that produces about 320–340 words with very few errors, rather than either extreme.

In practice, aim for 98% accuracy in training. At that level a 320 word run generates roughly six to eight mistake points, comfortably inside the buffer, and your net score ends up almost equal to your gross — which is the only comfortable place to sit on this formula.

Hindi candidates: Mangal, and the layout question

Hindi typing for railway posts is done in Mangal. Candidates are usually allowed to select the layout at the centre, and InScript is the standard choice. Because the deduction formula is harsh, Hindi candidates should spend the first two weeks of preparation only on matras, half letters and the anusvara — the characters that generate most Hindi typing mistakes — before attempting timed passages.

Switch the language control above to हिंदी to practise with the built-in InScript keyboard, or use the dedicated Hindi Mangal typing test for shorter drills.

Frequently asked questions

What speed is needed for the RRB NTPC typing skill test?

Thirty words per minute in English or twenty-five words per minute in Hindi, typed in Mangal, over a ten minute passage. The test is qualifying only.

How are mistakes deducted in the RRB typing test?

Mistake points are calculated as full mistakes plus half of the half mistakes, a buffer of 5% of words typed is subtracted, and each remaining mistake deducts ten words from your total before the speed is computed.

Does the RRB typing test carry marks?

No. It is a qualifying skill test. Clearing it keeps you in the running for typist posts; it does not change your merit position.

Which Hindi font is used in the railway typing test?

Mangal, with the layout normally selected at the examination centre. InScript is the layout most candidates use and the one built into this simulator.
